256 leaves (iii + 253) The edges retrimmed and spattered with red.

French gothic rotunda bookhands, more or less influenced by cursive which on occasions approaches anglicana.

Red and blue flourished initials; blue initials flourished in red; red or blue paraphs. In the margins of art. 11 are drolleries in pencil and ink.

Binding

Standard Merton s. xvii, sewn on four bands; formerly chained from the usual position. Fols. i-ii, 252–3 are paper binding leaves, the outermost from the same printed book as in MS 117.

Provenance

At the foot of f. 124v is pencilled ‘Iohannes Lymintone habet iiij quaterni’, s. xiv in. Perhaps John de Lemington (BRUO1130), fellow of Merton in 1328, still in 1331, still alive in 1349.

At the foot of f. 136 are two early pencilled notes, partly erased: ‘Explicit primus quaternus ’, and ‘quod facit proere pro quaternio’.

On f. iiiv is ‘Liber magistri Willelmi Duffeld ex empcione’. Above is ‘Liber medicus cuius contentus superius patent. Legatus collegio de Mertonhalle Oxon’ per magistrum Willelmum Duffeld nuper socium eiusdem ad incatenandum infra librariam ibidem.’ For William Duffield, fellow in 1398, no longer in 1422, see MS 91.

Above is a table of contents, s. xiv, and ‘Liber [Willelmi de Southecumbe erased]’. The place is in Devon.

‘8’ is inked on the foredge. Inside the front board is a sheet of paper with a table of contents, s. xvii, and ‘P. 2. 8. Art:’, canc. and replaced with ‘N. 3. 8. (CCXXV)’ in red; the College bookplate.
