128 leaves (iii + 125)The edges heavily retrimmed affecting marginalia and decoration, and spattered with red.

Hands

Two skilled anglicana hands, fols. 1–64v, 65–123, including a considerable amount of marginalia.

Decoration

On fol. 17 is a 5-line initial with full floral border in colours and gold. On fol. 1 is a champe initial with sprays. Blue initials flourished in red; red or blue paraphs.

Binding

Standard Merton s. xvii; sewn on five bands; formerly chained from the usual position. On f. 125, once a pastedown, are the marks of the large brass chain-staple (two pairs of holes in parallel). On fol. i is the mark of an iron chain-staple at the foot, near the foredge. Loose in the book is a slip of parchment with a table of contents of s. xv; this was probably cut from the original front pastedown.

Provenance

A professional product, possibly owned by Hammond Haydok (for whom see MS 16), at the College by s. xv ex.

At the head of fol. 1 is the James no. ‘277’ (recte 276), s. xvii in. A sheet of paper inside the front board has a table of contents and ‘C, 6, 10.’ (canc.), s. xvii, and modern ‘C. 1. 9 (XLVIII)’ in red. On fol. i is ‘N. 4. 9. Art:’, s. xvii. ‘9’ is inked on the foredge. On fol. iiivis the College bookplate.
