Physical extent

101 leaves (iii + 98) The edges retrimmed and spattered with red.

Hands

A single expert early gothic bookhand of the type usual in glossed books, probably English.

Decoration

Handsome 9–12-line initials in colours on burnished gold grounds, in ‘Channel Style’ (curling foliage and elongated beasts): fols. 1, 2v (standing nimbed prophet with book, blessing), 22, 29 (seated nimbed prophet with scroll, blessing), 41v (seated nimbed prophet with scroll), 44, 48, 56v (seated nimbed prophet with scroll), 61v, 66v, 72, 75v, 92v. Red or blue initials flourished in the other colour or both; small plain red or blue initials; running heads in capitals of both colours.

Binding

Standard Merton s. xvii, sewn on four bands; formerly chained from the usual position. fols. i and 98 are blank paper binding leaves. On fol. ii, formerly a pastedown in an earlier binding, is the mark of a brass chain-staple, at the foredge near the foot. There was once a single foredge strap.

Provenance

Similar to MS 287. On fol. iii is a thoroughly-erased 1-line inscription. On fol. iiiv ‘Librum iste dedit ad communem utilitatem omnium in hac sacra bibliotheca studentium Ricardus Fitz James sacre theologie minimus professor et nuper custos istius collegii de Mertone. Cuius anime propicietur Deus amen. Et continet communem glosam super duodecim prophetas minores.’ At the foot of fol. 97v ‘Liber Magistri Ricardi Fitz James sacre theologie professoris / emptus per eundem ultimo die Ianuarii anno Christi 1481 / prec’ vi s. viii d.’ Fitzjames, warden 1483–1507, for whom see MS 9, gave it to the College in 1494. It was placed in the library on 2 Aug. (Registrum, p. 184).

At the head of fol. 1 is the James no.‘197’, s. xvii in. Inside the front board is a sheet of paper with a title and ‘P. 1, 7 art:’, s. xvii, and ‘P. 1. 7. Art:’ again, canc. and replaced with ‘N. 2. 8 (CXX)’ in red; the College bookplate.
