Hands
A large and formal English gothic rotunda bookhand.
Decoration
Red and blue flourished initials with partial borders; red or blue initials flourished in the other colour; running heads in large capitals in the colours; red or blue initials and paraphs for capitula.
Binding
Standard Merton s. xvii; sewn on six bands; formerly chained from the usual position. fol. i has the mark of a chain-staple near the foot of the foredge; f. 192 has the mark of a brass one in the middle of the foot.
Acquisition
James no. 231, and therefore at the College before 1600. Loose in the book, probably once pasted inside the front board, is a sheet of paper with a table of contents and ‘N. 4. 6. Art:’, s. xvii, canc. and replaced with ‘C. 1. 6 (XLV)’ in red. On fol. iii is ‘C. 1. 6’ twice, in red ink and pencil. ‘6’ is inked on the foredge. On fol. iiivis the College bookplate.
Provenance
On fol. iv‘prec ii. marcas’, ‘Liber correctus est per totum’, and a large early press mark ‘F 2m’.
