Exceptionally thick, stiff parchment
Physical extent
227 leaves (iii + 224) The edges lightly retrimmed and stained yellow.
Hands
Two practised English bookhands influenced by anglicana, the first finishing with quire 15.
Decoration
Red and blue flourished initials with partial borders; blue initials flourished in red; plain red or blue initials and paraphs; lemmata underlined in red.
Binding
Late medieval: flush, cushion-bevelled wooden boards covered with tawed skin; sewn on six bands, raised on the spine and outlined with string. Blue and white endbands sewn through the spine cover. Two straps of tanned leather from recesses in the front board to catches at the rear, all gone. Near the foot of the back board are the marks of the large iron chain-staple. The mark of a brass chain-staple near the foot of the foredge of the front board.
Acquisition
On the front pastedown is a brief table of contents, s. xvii, and N. 3. 13. Art:, canc. and replaced with A. 1. 10 (XXXIX) in red. The College bookplate. At the head of fol. i is M. A. 2. 5, s. xvii. ‘13’ is inked on the foredge.
Provenance
At the head of fol. iiiv is ‘Liber domus scolarium de Merton ex dono magistro Hamondi Haydok incathenandus in libraria anno Domini mmoccccºlxviiiº’, in the same hand as Wyght’s ex dono in MS 38. For Hammond Haydok, see MS 16.
