315 leaves (iii + 312)The edges lightly retrimmed affecting early marginalia, and stained yellow.
Hands
Apparently a single, highly proficient gothic rotunda bookhand, probably English.
Decoration
Red and blue flourished initials; red or blue initials flourished in the other colour; red highlighting.
Binding
Late medieval, heavily repaired in modern times: chamfered oak boards with slightly projecting foredges, bared; formerly with two broad straps from recesses in the front board to catches at the back. Rebacked with modern vellum; sewn on five bands. On the front board and fol. i are marks of two brass chain-staples, one at the foot, the other near the foot of the foredge. Another set of holes in the board may be from the large chain-staple. The first leaf was once a pastedown.
Provenance
On fol. iiiv‘Iste liber est in custudia N. le Archur de Douor’ acomodatus fr[Two thoroughly erased lines]. Ista continentur in eo ...’, s. xiii ex. The long table of contents has been added to by hands of s. xvi and xvii. It is not known when the book came to the College prior to s. xvi in.
At the head of fol. 1 is the James no. ‘3’ (wrongly), s. xvii in. On fol. iv are ‘Liber Collegii Mertonensis’, ‘quae Titulos fol. 2 pag: 2’, and ‘N. 3. 10. Art’, s. xvii, the last canc. and replaced with ‘A. 3. 10 (XXXVI)’ in red. On fol. iiv ‘N. 3. 10. Art:’ in the same hand as earlier, followed by a long table of contents. ‘10’ is inked on the foredge. On fol. iiiv is the College bookplate.
