Hands

A single small, highly proficient English early gothic bookhand.

Decoration

On fol. 2v is an 8-line blue initial A, with red, blue, and green penwork ornament.

Red or blue initials flourished in both colours; red or blue initials flourished in the other colour.

Plain red or blue initials and paraphs.

A pencil sketch of foliage ornament within a square frame, in the margin of fol. 43.

Binding

s. xix, replacing one of s. xvii; sewn on four bands. Fols. i, 320 are paper blanks from the previous binding. Fols. 1 and 319 were pastedowns in an earlier binding.

Provenance

Made in England. On fol. iiv ‘Orate pro anima Thome Burstal capellani qui dedit istum librum Iohanni Brokholes capellano’, continued in another hand ‘qui Iohannes dedit Henrico Gairstang et idem Henricus dedit Collegio Marton’ in Oxonia ad orandum pro anima magistri Ricardi le Schrope [nuper ebor’ archiepiscopo over line] et animabus supradictis.’ Scrope (BRUO 1659–60) was executed in 1405.

Below is ‘Equiuoca nomina theologice cum exemplis’ and ‘li 5us’, c. 1500, showing that the book was then in a College electio.

Below again is ‘O. 8. 15 Art:’, s. ?xvii. The same shelf-mark is on fol. iv. ‘15’ is inked on the foredge.
