200 leaves (ii + 198) The edges retrimmed affecting some running heads, and spattered with red. Contemporary foliation in arabic numerals as far as 67.
Hands
Arts 1–2 in an English gothic rotunda bookhand; fols. 89–96v, 125–82 line 7 in an anglicana hand, succeeded by another to fol. 197; fols. 97–121v in a less formal bookhand than the first. The scribes of arts 1–2 and fols. 125–97 provide running heads.
Decoration
Red paraphs, highlighting and underlining. In art. 1 the keywords are in the margin in red.
Binding
Standard Merton s. xvii, sewn on four bands; formerly chained from the usual position. On fol. 198 are marks of two catches or clasps, and of a brass chain-staple at the foot.
Provenance
Bequeathed to the College by William Reed, fellow from 1344 until at least 1357, d. 1385, for whom see MS 8. On fol. i ‘Liber domus scolarium de Merton’ in Oxon’ in communi libraria eiusdem et ad usum communem sociorum ibidem studencium cathenandus. Ex dono reuerendi presulis magistri Willelmi tercii episcopi Cicestr’. Oretis igitur pro eo et animabus omnibus fidelium defunctorum. X. uolumen.’ This is partly repeated on fol. ii, in a hand of s. xvii.
At the head of fol. 1 is the James no. ‘283’ (?recte 126), s. xvii in.
Inside the front board is a sheet of paper with a table of contents and ‘F. 5, 12’ (canc.), s. xvii, and ‘O. 8. 12. Art:’, canc. and replaced with ‘C. 1. 12 (CXCVII)’ in red; the College bookplate.
