335 leaves (i + 334) The edges retrimmed and stained red.

Hands

A single proficient English hand to fol. 331, writing bastard anglicana. Another of the same thereafter.

Decoration

English: 7-line initials in colours and gold, with foliage and full borders, on fols. 1, 7, 256 (Ps. 109); 6-line initials with 3-sided borders fols. 54v (Ps. 26), 84v (Ps. 38), 119v (Ps. 50), 121 (Ps. 52), 159v, 160 (Pss. 68–9), 192v (Ps. 80), 226v (Ps. 97); blue initials flourished in red, 3-line to begin Psalms, 1-line to begin verses; lemmata in red; auctoritates underlined and highlighted in red.

Binding

Standard Merton s. xvii; sewn on six bands; formerly chained from the usual position. The first and last leaves were pastedowns in an earlier binding. At the foot of fol. i is the mark of a brass chain-staple; on fol. 334 are the marks of two strap-pins.

Provenance

Made in England, a high-quality, commercial product.

Bequeathed by Robert Elyot, fellow of All Souls College, d. 1498, for whom see MS 46. The book was received in the library on 5 August 1499 (Registrum, p. 235).

Inside the front board is a sheet of paper with a title and ‘F. 2, 3’ (canc.), s. xvii, and ‘O. 8. 8. Art:’, canc. and replaced with ‘C. 2. 2 (CXCIII)’ in red; the College bookplate.
