Hands

Several similar English gothic rotunda bookhands. At least one of them prolongs ornamental ascenders into the upper margin.

Decoration

Red and blue flourished initials; blue initials flourished in red; red or blue paraphs. Occasional red or blue initials and red highlighting.

Binding

standard Merton s. xvii, rebacked and repaired by Maltby; sewn on five bands; formerly chained from the usual position. fols. i, 248–9 are modern blanks. fol. ii is a paper leaf from the binding of s. xvii, from a copy of Felinus Sandeus, Commentaria super titulo de iudiciis, pr. Lyons 1499 (Hain 14319). fol. 1 has marks of straps at head, foot and of two at the foredge.

Provenance

Given to the College by William Reed in 1374: UO49. 80. On fol. 1v, all in the same hand, ‘Liber Willelmi Reed prepositi Wynghammensis quem habuit per escambium pro alio libro cum M. Willelmo Lyneham quondam socio domus de Merton’. Oretis igitur pro utroque’; ‘Originalia diuersa Anselmi et Augustini’; ‘Liber domus scolarium de Merton’ in Oxon’ in communi libraria eiusdem et ad usum communem sociorum ibidem studencium cathenandus. Ex dono uenerabilis patris domini Willelmi tercii episcopi Cicestrie. Oretis igitur pro eodem et benefactoribus eiusdem ac fidelium animabus a purgatorio liberandis. Walterus Roberti.’; ‘Oretis igitur, si placet, pro Waltero Roberti, scriba uenerabilis patris predicti, qui suprascriptos titulos et titulos aliorum 99 librorum per dictum patrem ut premittitur eidem domui datorum ad emendacionem librarie eius inscripsit, et circa eosdem libros et alios quam plures per diuersa collegia Uniuersitatis Oxon’ per ipsum uenerabilem patrem distributos diligenter insudauit.’ For Reed, fellow from 1344 until at least 1357, d. 1385, see MS 8. Lyneham (BRUO 1193) was fellow in 1330, until 1349, d. by Jul. 1361.

Inside the front board are paper sheets with two tables of contents, s. xvii. On the board itself is ‘N. 2. 7. Art:’, canc. and replaced with ‘B. 2. 7 (XIX)’ in red. The College bookplate. ‘7’ is inked on the foredge.
