Hands

A low-grade gothic rotunda bookhand, using a thick nib and very black ink.

Decoration

On fols. 2, 3v modest gold initials on pink and blue with partial vine-leaf borders; blue initials flourished in red; blue or red paraphs; rubrication and lemmata underlined in red.

Binding

s. xix; sewn on seven bands. On fol. 1 are marks of clasps at head and foot, two on the foredge. On fol. 250 are faint marks from the large iron chain-staple. Fols. i-iii, 251–3 are modern paper blanks.

Provenance

Made in England, given to Merton College in or soon after 1376.

On fol. 1, s. xiv, ‘Caucio fratris Nicholai de Steningtone exposita apud Sanctam Frideswidam pro Beda de gestibus Anglorum (in another hand) et pertinet ad ch pro 3 ’.

On fol. 1v ‘Liber domus scolarium de Merton’ in Oxon’ ex legato Magistri Ioh’ Raynham sacre pagine professoris et quondam socii eiusdem domus’. For John Reynham, fellow 1335–58, d. 1376, see MS 18. Nothing further is known of Stenington (BRUO 1771).

Seen at Merton by John Bale (Appendix C, no. 33). Also on fol. 1v are ‘O. 8. 3. Art.’, s. xvii, canc. and replaced by ‘M. 1. 3 (CLXXXVIII)’ in red; the College bookplate.

At the head of fol. 2 is the James no. ‘148’ (recte 147), s. xvii in.
