Form

codex

Physical extent

235 leaves (ii + 233) The edges savagely retrimmed with loss of writing in three margins, and spattered with red.

Hands

The same small neat anglicana hand annotates all parts of the book, I and III heavily; another annotates II only.

Binding

Standard Merton s. xvii, sewn on six bands; formerly chained from the usual position. fols. i-ii, 1 and 231–3 are of thick, stiff parchment. The outermost leaves were pastedowns in an earlier binding with wooden boards. At the foot of fol. 233v is the mark of a brass chain-staple. Near the foot of fol. 230 (the last leaf of quire 21) are the marks of the large iron chain-staple.

Provenance

At the head of fol. 123v, written with a stylus, ‘Iste .x. pecie 9 originalium uendantur pro viii sol’’.

On fol. 230v ‘Caucio magistri Iohannis de Renham exposita in cista de Roburi pro ... in die Mercurii proxima post festum sancte Agathe anno domini MCCCXLVI’, and other erased cautio notes, including ‘Caucio Iohannis ?Wordeham ... / millesimo CCC ... ’, and ‘Supplementum ... magistris I. de Renham et Rich’ de Byllingham’. John Reynham (BRUO 1570–1), fellow 1335–58, was chancellor of Oxford University 1361–3, d. 1376. Billingham (BRUO 188–9) was fellow in 1344, still in 1361, the latest date at which he is known to have lived.

At the head of fol. 2, cropped by the binder, is ‘Liber domus scolarium de Merton’ in Oxon’ ex legato Magistri Iohannis Raynham sacre pagine professoris uniuersitatis Oxon’ et quondam socii eiusdem domus cuius anime propicietur Deus Amen.’

On fol. 1v is a table of contents and ‘N. 2. 6. Art:’, s. xvii. The same hand writes the same shelf-mark inside the front board, where it is canc. and replaced with ‘B. 2. 6 (XVIII)’ in red. A sheet of paper has another table of contents, s. xvii, canc. with a cross-reference to that on fol. 1v. The College bookplate.
