323 leaves (ii + 321) The edges retrimmed and spattered with red.

Hands

French gothic rotunda bookhands.

Decoration

Parisian. Red and blue flourished initials with long extensions; red or blue initials flourished in the other colour; red or blue paraphs; running heads in capitals of the colours; underlining in red.

Binding

Standard Merton s. xvii, sewn on five bands; formerly chained from the usual position. The outermost leaves were formerly pastedowns in an earlier binding. Near the foot of the early leaves is the mark of a chain-staple.

Provenance

Made in Paris.

Bought for the College when Richard Billingham was subwarden, c. 1350 (Appendix B, no. 50), as was MS 273. On f. 320v ‘Liber scolarium de Merton ex empcione’. UO48. 6.

Inside the front board is a sheet of paper with an elaborate table of contents, s. xvii, and ‘Q. 1. 6. Art:’, canc. and replaced with ‘O. 1. 5 (CCLXXIV)’ in red; the College bookplate.
