Support

Parchment

Physical extent

236 leaves (iv + 232)

Hands

Probably two similar English scribes, the second beginning at fol. 169, writing proficient gothic rotunda bookhand of university type, influenced by anglicana. Running heads, probably in the same hand, throughout.

Decoration

Blue initials flourished in red; red paraphs. The work is rather rough.

Binding

Maltby 1965, brown goatskin; fols i-ii, 231–2 are modern paper blanks. On fol. iiiv are the marks of two straps and of a brass chain-staple at the foredge, near the foot. fol. iii was probably a pastedown (a sheet of modern parchment has been pasted over it as strengthening), and the last stub of quire 30 is probably the remains of the other.

Provenance

On fol. iiiv‘Liber domus scolarium de Mertone in Oxonia ex dono M. Willelmi Loryng canonici ecclesie Sarum cathenandus in communi libraria eiusdem domus’. A hand of s. xvii has added ‘A.D. 1415’. Loryng (BRUO 1163), canon of Salisbury from 1363, d. by Feb. 1416. In 1415–16 the College paid Robert Maslyn 15s. 8d. to go to Salisbury ‘pro libris Loryng adquirendis’ (Appendix B, no. 85).

At the head of fol. 1 is ‘D. 7, 2’, s. xvii. On fol. iiivis ‘O. 3. 8. Art:’, s. xvii, and ‘L 3 6 (CXXXVI)’ in modern pencil.
