(fols. i–iiv, 266–7v) Waste leaves of another book of similar date, appearance and contents: written space 210 × 150, frame-ruled with pencil in 2 cols; written in c. 43 lines in a secretary hand; decoration lacks.

271 leaves (iv + 267) Retrimmed affecting marginalia.

Hands

Art. 1 in a neat anglicana hand; art. 2 to fol. 120v (end of quire 10) in another; fols. 121–63v in the cursive of the Frisian ‘librarius’ Nicholas of Bolsward (BRUO 208). He also wrote Lincoln Coll. lat. 93, and Oriel Coll. 70 in 1429. A similar hand corrects his work heavily in the margins.

Decoration

On fol. 37 a 6-line red and blue initial with 3-sided border in the colours; blue initials flourished in red; red or blue paraphs in art. 1, red only in art. 2, ceasing after fol. 91; plain red or blue initials in the index.

Binding

s. xv, repaired s. xix: chamfered oak boards with slightly projecting foredges, bared and rebacked with brown pigskin; resewn on five bands; two broad straps from recesses in the front board to catches at the rear, the straps now gone. On the rear board and leaves at the end are the marks of the large iron chain-staple. The stub before fol. i was once (?part of) a pastedown in the same binding.

Provenance

On fol. ivv, s. xv, ‘Liber domus scolarium de Merton’ Oxon’ emptus anno Domini MCCCCXXXI quando maxime floruit scola doctoris presentis.’

At the head of fol. 267, s. xv, is ‘In isto libro continentur formalitates Petri Thome et conflatus Francisci super primum sentenciarum precium xli s. xi d.’

At the head of fol. 1 is the James no. ‘38’, s. xvii in.

On fol. iii is a paper slip, s. xvii, with a table of contents, ‘D. 6, 10’ (canc.), and ‘O. 3. 5. Art:’, canc. and replaced with ‘L. 1. 5 (CXXXIII)’ in red.
