A single scribe, writing anglicana in pale ink.

Decoration

On f. 1 a 3-line G in colours and gold with 3-sided border; on f. 38v a red and blue flourished initial with partial border; blue initials flourished in red; red titles and highlighting. At the foot of f. 253 is pencilled a note of the cost of the decoration: ‘iiijC pret’ xxix litt’’.

Binding

Contemporary, tawed skin (pink on the turn-ins) over flush, cushion-bevelled oak boards; original sewing on four bands, slightly raised on the spine. Two straps of pink leather with brass clasps from recesses in the front board to catches at the back; only the lower strap and clasp now remain, and neither catch. Head- and tailbands, the former oversewn with green and gold silk, the other plain. On the rear board are two marks of chain-staples, one a single pair of holes, the other the usual traces of the large iron chain-staple. On the front board is the mark of a brass chain-staple at the foredge near the foot.

Provenance

On the front pastedown ‘Blancpayn in Milkstret Stonham (against both names) nati London in Chepe (In another hand) Scardeburgh’ in strata seu uico uulgariter nuncupato Lumbardestreet’. William Blankpayn (BRUO 199–200) was fellow in 1359, still in 1380; still alive in 1386. Richard Scarborough (BRUO 1651–2) was fellow c. 1449, still in 1464, d. by Oct. 1472.

On f. iiv ‘Hunc librum dedit M’ Robertus Stonham (above is written Sota multum nobilis) collegio aule de Mertone cuius anime propicietur Deus qui orat per anima illius sit benedictus in eternum’. For Stoneham, fellow in 1384, until 1397, see MS 118.

Near the head of f. 253 an inscription appears to have been thoroughly erased.

Also on f. iiv are ‘P. 4. 13. Art.’, s. xvii, modern ‘C. 2. 13 (CCLXII)’ in red, and the College bookplate.
