Physical extent
227 leaves (v + 222) The edges retrimmed affecting marginalia, and spattered with red.
Hands
Art. 1 in a neat, formal, upright anglicana; arts 2–3 in an English gothic rotunda bookhand of university type.
Decoration
Art. 1 opens with a red and blue flourished initial; thereafter only red paraphs. Arts 2–3 undecorated; unfilled spaces for coloured initials and rubrics.
Binding
Standard Merton s. xvii, sewn on seven bands; formerly chained from the usual position. At the foot of fol. i is the mark of an iron chain-staple; a similar mark occurs near the foot of the foredge of fol. 221; it does not occur on fol. 222. It appears that these leaves have been reversed: fol. 221 was once the back pastedown, and shows that the book was then sewn on six bands. fol. 1 was also once a pastedown.
Provenance
At the head of fol. i, s. xiv/xv, is ‘Derby’, a common surname, but perhaps Robert de Derby (BRUO 571), fellow of Oriel in 1360, d. by July 1361.
At the head of fol. 218v, in an early hand, is pencilled ‘Precium .x. s.’
On fol. iiv‘Liber Iohannis Wyttenham quem emit de Iohanne Brown stacionario Oxon’ anno Domini 1403 in die sanctorum Iohannis et Pauli’.
Just below this is an erased note: ‘Caucio Iohannis Huntman exposita in antiqua cista uniuersitatis pro una marca in uigilia omnium sanctorum anno Domini M. CCC octogesimo sexto.’
At the foot of fol. 216 a 2-line inscription has been erased, ‘Liber iste pertinet collegio Oxon’ per magistrum Willelmum prepositum eiusdem collegii’. One suspects that the college was Oriel and the provost William de Daventre, 1349–73 (BRUO 547).
Below is ‘Liber magistri Ricardi Fytz Iames sacre theologie professoris quem emit 12 die Nouembris Anno Christi 1482. Precium vi s. viii d.’ On fol. vv, in the usual untidy secretary hand, ‘Durandus super Sentenciarum libros de dono Magistri Ricardi Fitz Iames nuper custodis istius Collegii de Mertone cuius anime propicietur Deus amen’, and ‘B. Lier.2us.’, in the usual hand (see above, MS 60). Huntman (BRUO 987–8) was fellow of Oriel in 1373, still in 1387, chancellor of Lincoln Cathedral, still alive in 1427. Wyttenham (BRUO 2131) was fellow of New College from 1390 until at least 1408. For Fitzjames, warden of Merton 1483–1507, see MS 9.
At the head of fol. 1 is the James no. ‘35’, s. xvii in. On fol. i is ‘O. 3. 2. Art:’, s. xvii.
Inside the front board is a sheet of paper with a table of contents, s. xvii, and ‘O. 3. 2. Art:’ again, canc. and replaced with ‘L. 1. 2 (CXXX)’ in red; the College bookplate.
