Physical extent
252 leaves (iii + 248, incl. 231A) The edges savagely retrimmed, with loss of text and running heads, and spattered with red. fol. 231A lacks the outer col., but no text.
Hands
All parts written in anglicana: the two parts of I are in two similar hands; II is in a single hand, and III is in one hand or several similar ones.
Decoration
Rough red initials and titles; red highlighting and paraphs.
Binding
Standard Merton s. xvii; sewn on four bands; formerly chained from the usual position. fols. i-iii, 246–8 are paper binding leaves, the first two and the last from a printed Latin-English dictionary, s. xvi. On fol. iiiv is a table of contents, s. xvii.
Provenance
All parts made in England, probably for a parish priest. At the head of fol. 245v is ‘Liber domus scolarium de Merton’ in Oxon’ ut incathenetur in libraria eiusdem ex dono Magistri Henrici Seuer sacre theologie professoris. Oretis igitur pro eo’, in an anglicana hand influenced by humanistica. For Sever, see MS 6.
Near the foot of this leaf, towards the spine, is a rust-mark presumably from a chain-staple of uncertain form.
Inside the front board is a long table of contents and ‘N. 2. 1. Art’, s. xvii. Pasted on is a sheet of paper with pencilled ‘N. 2. 1’, canc. and replaced with ‘A. 1. 1. (XIII)’ in red. The College bookplate.
