Hands

The humanistic bookhand of John Pacy, who also wrote CCCC 158, and wrote and signed Cambridge, Pembroke Coll. MS 235 in 1464.

Decoration

Initials in colours and gold: on fol. 2 initial and 3-sided border; on fols. 112, 162, 184, 244, initial and 2-sided border; on fols. 34, 75, 95, 108, 113 (2), 114rv coloured initials and sprays. Otherwise blue initials flourished in red.

Binding

Contemporary; thin, slightly chamfered oak boards with slightly projecting squares, bared and rebacked with modern vellum, sewn on five bands; on the rear board is nailed the usual label under horn with Fitzjames’ arms and ex dono. At one stage a much larger one appears to have been nailed to the front board, extending over the spine covering.

Provenance

On fol. 1v, in the usual untidy secretary hand, a long table of contents followed by ‘Ex dono domini Ricardi Fitz James nuper Cicestrensis episcopi et custodis istius collegii’. For Fitzjames, see MS 9; the dolphin from his arms is in the opening initial on fol. 2. ‘9’ (altered from ?’16’) is inked on the foredge.

On fol. 1v is ‘N. 7. 9. Art:’, s. xvii, and the College bookplate, together with ‘LXXXIX’.
