fols. i, ii blank. On fol. iv is a table of contents in the same hand (s. xiv) as that in MS 29, 180, 188, 277 and 314, probably John Reynham’s, including texts, now missing, which originally followed II: ‘De institucione nouiciorum | De sacramentis def | Tractatus Bradewardini de gracia | Seruius de metris | Centimetrum eiusdem | Theodorus de metris | Quedam tabula super bibliam [in another hand] Ista tabula aufertur.’ Against the title of art. 5 another hand has written ‘et est Tryvet’. Against the titles of arts 5 and 6 a different hand has written ‘Tabula doctoris Tryvet super allegorias libri Ouidii de transformatis secundum ordinem alphabeti’ and ‘Tryvet doctor sacre theologie super Ouidium in de transformatis.

Physical extent

162 leaves (ii + 160) The edges heavily retrimmed and stained red. Fols. i-ii are of thick, stiff parchment. Six original books, together early.

Binding

Standard Merton s. xvii; sewn on five bands; formerly chained from the usual position. fol. i was a pastedown in an earlier binding. On fol. i are the marks of two foredge straps; at the foot of fol. 160, cropped by the binder, are the marks of the large iron chain-staple.

Provenance

On fol. iiv, s. xiv ex., ‘Liber domus scolarium de Merton’ in Oxon’ ex legato Magistri Iohannis Raynham sacre pagine professoris et quondam socii eiusdem domus cuius anime propicietur Deus Amen.’ For Reynham, d. 1376, see MS 18.

Inside the front board is a sheet of paper with contents, s. xvii. On the board itself is ‘N. 7. 5. Art:’, canc. and replaced with ‘B. 1. 10 (LXXXV)’ in red; the College bookplate. ‘5’ is inked on the foredge.
