Physical extent
231 leaves (ii + 227, incl. 161A and 175A), , The edges retrimmed, with loss of marginalia, and stained red. Fols. 168–79 are only c. 265 mm. deep. I is foliated at least as far as f. 177 in early arabic numerals 1–16, 41–3, 17–39, 56–69, 131–42, 155–86, 189, 200–12, 218–52, 254–64, 266–71, 214–15, 97–106 (mod. 177). The gap 189–200 is a mistake of the foliator; most of the other gaps represent losses of blank leaves at the ends of quires.
Binding
Standard Merton s. xvii, sewn on three bands; formerly chained from the usual position. Fols. i-ii, 227 were pastedowns in an earlier binding. f. i was probably originally a piece of padding in the binding, sewn in modern times. f. ii has marks of two straps, and of a brass chain-staple at the foot. f. 227 has marks of two clasps at the foredge, and one each at head and tail.
Provenance
Part I was written in Oxford and acquired by John Sheppey while he was studying there. It was probably used by him for the construction of his own sermons collected in New Coll. MS 92.
It was given to the College in 1374 by William Reed: UO49. 65. Walterus Roberti.’ For William Reed, fellow from 1344 until at least 1357, d. 1385, see MS 8.
At the head of f. 1 is the James no. ‘216’, s. xvii. Inside the front board are many titles and notes on the contents, s. xvii, ‘F. 6, 11’, canc., and ‘P. 3. 15. Art:’, canc. and replaced with ‘B. 1. 6 (CCXLVIII)’ in red; the College bookplate.
