143 leaves (i + 142)The edges retrimmed and stained yellow. fol. i is of thick, stiff parchment.

Hands

A proficient formal gothic textura, probably French.

Decoration

None; unfilled spaces for coloured initials and rubrics. From quire 5 rubrication and red highlighting.

Binding

Modern; bare oak boards, backed with vellum; sewn on six bands. fol. i was formerly a pastedown; on it are marks of two straps at the foredge, and of a brass (post-medieval) chain-staple near the foot of the foredge. A spot of rust on fol. 142v may be from the large iron chain-staple.

Provenance

At the head of fol. 1 ‘Liber domus scolarium de Merton’ Oxon’ ex legatione M. Iohannis Stauele’, and (later) ‘2’. UO47. 217, ‘in libraria’, valued at 20s. Staveley (BRUO 1770) occ. as fellow in 1323 and 1335, d. soon after 1349.

On fol. ivis ‘N. 7. 1. Art:’, s. xvii, canc. and replaced with ‘I. 2. 1 (LXXXI)’ in red; the College bookplate.
