Physical extent

292 leaves (ii + 290)The edges heavily retrimmed, affecting running heads and marginalia, and stained red. Fols. i-ii and 289–90 (probably post-medieval) are of thick, stiff parchment.

Hands

A proficient gothic rotunda bookhand influenced by anglicana; the same hand as MS 116.

Decoration

On fol. 1 a red and blue flourished initial with partial border in the colours; red or blue initials flourished in the other colour; red or blue paraphs.

Binding

Standard Merton s. xvii, repaired and rebacked; sewn on five bands; previously chained from the usual position. There are marks of brass chain-staples near the foot of the foredge of fol. ii and near the top of the foredge of fol. 290. fols. i (little more than a stub) and 290 were pastedowns in an earlier binding.

Provenance

Part of a set with MS 116. Given by Richard of Worplesdon (BRUO 2017), fellow in 1277, second warden from 1285, d. by Nov. 1295: UO47. 127.

Inside the front board is a sheet of paper with a title and ‘D. 5, 4’ (canc.), s. xvii, and the College bookplate. On another slip is ‘O. 1. 9. Art:’, s. xvii (repeated on fol. iiv), canc. and replaced with ‘L. 2. 8 (CXV)’ in red. A third slip has ‘Ms. Merton Coll. 95.’ in purple ink.
