112 leaves (ii + 110) The edges retrimmed affecting running heads and marginalia, and spattered with red. Fols. i-ii, 109–10 are of thick, stiff parchment.

A proficient small English gothic rotunda bookhand.

Decoration

On fol. 1 is a flourished red and blue initial with 1-sided border; red or blue initials flourished in the other colour; red or blue paraphs, underlining in red.

Binding

Standard Merton s. xvii; sewn on five bands; formerly chained from the usual position. On fol. i is the mark of a brass chain-staple near the foot of the foredge. The outermost leaves were pastedowns in an earlier binding.

Provenance

On fol. i ‘Liber domus scolarium de Merton ex tradicione Bernard’ pro Hugucione’, s. xiv, repeated on fol. iivin a hand of s. xvii. This must refer to Thomas Bernard (BRUO 179), fellow in 1322–3 and 1346: UO47. 142, ‘in libraria’.

Lower down is ‘Caucio M. [erased] pro ii s.’, s. xiv.

At the foot of fol. 85 a pen trial ofc.1500 includes the name ‘Ric’ Borstalle’ (perhaps the Borstalle who wrote Bodl. Libr., Lat. misc. d. 53).

At the head of fol. 1 is the James no. ‘30’ (but this is MS 116), s. xvii in. Inside the front board is a sheet of paper with a title, s. xvii, and ‘O. 1. 8. Art:’, canc. and replaced with ‘L. 2. 7 (CXIV)’ in red; the College bookplate.
