90 leaves (ii + 88) Fols. i-ii, 87–8 of thick, stiff parchment; the edges retrimmed and stained red.
Hands
A rather formal gothic rotunda bookhand, probably French, using pale ink.
Decoration
Parisian. On f. 1 a red and blue flourished initial with long extensions; blue initials flourished in red; red or blue paraphs; red highlighting.
Binding
Standard Merton s. xvii, sewn on four bands; formerly chained from the usual position. The first and last leaves were pastedowns in an earlier binding, which may have had a brass chain-staple on the front board, near the foot of the foredge. On f. 88 are the marks of two clasps, and of the large iron chain-staple.
Provenance
At the head of f. i is ‘Liber uictorie precii trium solidorum’, s. xiv.
On f. iivis ‘Liber domus scolarium de Mertone in Oxonia’, s. xiv ex. Inside the front board is a sheet of paper with ‘F. 2, 4’ (canc.) and title, s. xvii, and ‘P. 3. 12. Art:’, canc. and replaced with ‘B. 1. 4 (CCXLV)’ in red; the College bookplate.
