Physical extent

240 leaves (ii + 238) The edges retrimmed with occasional loss of marginalia and stained red.

Hands

Several proficient anglicana hands of varying degrees of formality. Cade writes art. 4 in a low-grade bookhand influenced by anglicana.

Decoration

Blue initials flourished in red, on fol. 1 with a partial border in the colours; red or blue paraphs; underlining in red. Decoration ceases from fol. 227.

Binding

Standard Merton s. xvii; sewn on five bands; formerly chained from the usual position. fols. i and 238 were formerly pastedowns. At the foot of fol. 238 is the mark of the large iron chain-staple.

Provenance

On fol. i, upside down, ‘Iste liber legatur collegio de Merton Halle a magistro Iohanne Rysborw quondam socio eiusdem domus cuius anime propicietur Deus amen.’ The inscription is repeated on fol. iiv, in a hand of s. xvii. Risborough (BRUO 1577–8) was fellow in 1373, until 1397.

Inside the front board is a sheet of paper with ‘D. 5, 12’ (canc.) and a table of contents, s. xvii, and ‘O. 1. 7. Art:’ canc. in pencil and replaced with ‘N. 2. 11’. Another hand writes ‘(In Coxe’s Catal. MS. Merton CXIII)’.
