Physical extent

350 leaves (iv + 346) The edges heavily retrimmed, affecting running heads, and spattered with red.

Hands

A French gothic rotunda bookhand, except for fols. 93–112 (end of bks. 2, and 4- and 3-col. tabula to the whole work), in a much smaller bookhand.

Decoration

Red and blue flourished initials; blue or red initials flourished in the other colour; red or blue paraphs; running heads in capitals of the colours.

Binding

Standard Merton s. xvii, repaired and rebacked; resewn on four bands; formerly chained from the usual position. Fols. i-ii, 345–6 are modern paper blanks. On the early parchment leaves are marks of the large iron chain-staple at the head. However, these leaves are now upside down and must formerly have been at the back, where this staple was normally sited.

At the head of fol. 1 is the James no. ‘145’, s. xvii in.

Inside the front board is a sheet of paper with ‘D. 5, 10’ (canc.) and contents, s. xvii, and ‘O. 1. 3. Art:’, canc. and replaced with ‘L. 2. 3 (CIX)’ in red; the College bookplate.
