Physical extent

363 leaves (v + 358) The edges heavily retrimmed, damaging running heads and marginalia, and spattered with red.

Hands

An English gothic rotunda bookhand of university type. Marginal annotation in anglicana hands little later than the main text.

Decoration

On fol. 1 is an unfilled space for a painted opening initial; red and blue flourished initials; blue initials flourished in red, with a short extension in both colours; red or blue paraphs, running heads in red and blue capitals.

Binding

s. xix, doubtless replacing one of s. xvii; sewn on eight bands. Fols. i and 358 are blank paper binding leaves.

Provenance

Professionally made, probably at Oxford.

On fol. 3v ‘[ Hugonis Stantone’, s. xiv. Hugh Staunton (BRUO 1768) was fellow in 1324–5, still in 1346.

On fol. 353v the stationer’s mark of John Godsond (1438–56) and the valuations ‘lx s.’ (canc.), ‘v marcas’ (canc.), with ‘C. cum supplementum 2o fº antiqua’, and ‘lvi s.’;

Over erasure, ‘Caucio Magistri Gilberti Kymer cancellarii et Thome Balsall’ exposita in cista de Celtone v. die Aprilis anno Domini MCCCCLII et iacet pro lx s. et habet supplementum 2º fº antiqua’;

‘Caucio M. Gylberti Kymer cancellarii et Thome Balsall’ exposita in cista de Celton x. die Maii (altered toxvi Decembris) anno Domini 1455 (55over erasure) et habet supplementum 2o fº antiqua et ia’ pro lviii s. lvi s. liiii s. lii s. (lviii, lvi, liiii canc.)’.

Canc., ‘Caucio Kymer et T. Balsall et T Ster’ exposita in cista de Celton 17 (on erasure) die Decembris anno Domini MCCCCLVII (altered from ?LVI) et habet supplementum 2º fº antiqua et ia. pro xlviii s. (altered from ?l s.)’;

‘Caucio Thome Balsall et Thome Ster’ exposita in cista de Celton xi. die Decembris MCCCCLVIII et habet supplementum 2o fº Antiqua et ia’ pro xlvi s.’

Gilbert Kymer (BRUO 1068–9) was chancellor 1431–34, Thomas Balsall (BRUO 100) was fellow c. 1448–1458; Thomas Sterr (BRUO 1773–4) was fellow c. 1462 until at least 1476–7, d. by Feb. 1497.

Inside the front board is a sheet of paper with ‘D. 7, 5’ (canc.) and two tables of contents, s. xvii, ‘O. 1. 1. Art:’, s. xvii, canc. and replaced with ‘L. 2. 1 (CVII)’, in red, and the College bookplate.
