A proficient, doubtless professional, cursive of Continental appearance.
Decoration
Each alphabetical section opens with a blue initial flourished in red; otherwise red initials flourished in blue-black.
Binding
Standard Merton s. xvii; sewn on five bands; formerly chained from the usual position. fol. i was formerly a pastedown. At the foot is the mark of a brass chain-staple.
Provenance
To fol. iiivis pasted a rectangular parchment slip with holes from brass pins, obviously formerly a cover label under horn, with ‘Distincciones Boraston. Ex dono Magistri Iohannis Wode quondam archidiaconi midd’’, in textura. At the foot of fol. 2, in the same hand, is ‘Ex dono M. Iohannis Woode in theologia baccalarii quondam consocii collegii de Merton in Oxonia’. For Wode see MS 55.
On fol. 216v ‘Precium huius libri xxvi. s. viii. d.’ Beneath is ‘Liber M. Iohannis [er.]’.
At the head of fol. 1 is the James no. ‘190’, s. xvii in.
Inside the front board is a sheet of paper with ‘D. 6, 4’ (canc.) and a title, s. xvii, and ‘N. 8. 6. Art:’, canc. and replaced with ‘I. 3. 6. (CI)’ in red; the College bookplate.
