Proficient French gothic rotunda bookhands.
Decoration
On fols. 1, 114, 146, 181 (opening books), large blue and gold initials flourished and with full borders in red and blue; red and blue flourished initials; red or blue initials flourished in the other colour; red or blue paraphs.
Binding
Standard Merton s. xvii, rebacked and repaired; sewn on six bands; formerly chained from the usual position. fols. i and 201 were formerly pastedowns, with marks of straps at the foredge, head and tail.
Provenance
Probably made in Paris.
Erased inscriptions on fols. iv (caucio with several supplements), iiv, 200v (cautio in the St John chest, dated 1449, including the name ?‘Wainflete’), 201 (‘Iste liber est ad usum fratris de ?Bello communis de conuentu Et est magister Ocham incipiens de super 4. sentenciarum precii vii. marcharum’).
On fol. 203v is a cautio of 1466 in the Chichele chest, the name erased, with a supplement ‘doctorem subtilem 2ºfº proprium’.
At the head of fol. 1 is ‘Ockam prec’ xl. s’, s. xv, erased.
It is not known when the book came to the College prior to s. xvii in. Inside the front board is a sheet of paper with ‘D. 7, 9’ (canc.) and contents, s. xvii, ‘I. 3. 5 (C)’ in red, and the College bookplate.
