Binding

Sewn on five bands. Standard Exeter binding: simple and quite elegant, calf over millboards, the calf bearing blind decoration of a floral type, early 19th century.

Provenance

The book’s pre-Exeter history is unknown and how long the parts have been united is unclear.

On fol. 1v is a title in an italic hand of s. xvi2 and (s. xv) ‘Iste liber assignatur ad perpetuum vsum Rectoris et Scolarium Collegij Exon’ in Oxon’ per venerabilem virum magistrum Johannem Alward Rectorem Ecclesie parochialis de Stokebruere in Comitatu Northampton’ quondam dicti Collegij Socium.’ He had died by March 1458: see BRUO, also under MS 6, History.

Recorded at Exeter c. 1600 as Ecloga, no. 10, then CMA, no. 35.
